Vem é man – masculinity in schools

Vem e´ man? – Masculinity project – This was an educational project funded by Brita-Maria Rehnlunds stiftelse where the aim was to renegotiate the concept of masculinity through workshop activity in schools and by creating new materials, among others a film. Working language, Swedish and Finnish.

This project lasted from August 2018-December 2019.

Led by Nana Blomqvist the activities were the following

  • development of workshop concepts on masculinity together with workshopleaders
  • Creation of a film and other materials to be used in educational purposes regarding masculinity work
  • approximately 50 interactive workshops held in schools on masculinity with the newly developed concepts.
  • Education of teachers and others who work with young people.
  • Developing Internordic networks on masculinity work

In connection with the MeToo campaign, it became clear on a broader societal level that there is a destructive pattern in what we normally understand as masculinity. Men are overrepresented in crime statistics, violence statistics and suicide statistics, and boys underperform in schools.

Although gender norms are not the only explanatory variable behind crime and self-harm statistics, it is impossible to ignore the fact that even very young boys express an idea of masculinity where men do not cry, always manage on their own, need to prove their potent heterosexuality and contempt for homosexuals and what is usually considered female. These perceptions of gender have consequences for both men themselves and society as a whole.

The workshops received very good feedback both by the target groups and the teachers following the workshops.
